The Research Paper
MLA Documentation Style:

We will be using the MLA style manual for any writing that uses other sources for  evidence.  As a writer you will be responsible for applying the MLA style consistently to your paper from beginning to end.  Following is a partial list of the rules for parenthetic references and Works Cited Entries that specifically apply to the Argument paper.  For a more complete text, refer to the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.

Works Cited
You are expected to have a "Works Cited" page at the end of your paper.  Cite all  sources on this page using the following format.  If certain items do not apply or are not available, simply skip those and go on to the next item.

   Books, Pamphlets, CD-Rom, etc.
                    Author's surname, first name.  "Title of article, document, es-
                                say, etc."  Title of book, anthology, multivolume work,
                              reference book, pamphlet, CD-Rom, etc.  Vol. 2.  Ed.
                                First name followed by surname.  3rd ed.  City, State
                                of publisher:  Name of Publisher, most recent copy-
                                 right date.  page numbers.

Magazines, Newspapers, Interviews,
Letters, Records, Videocassettes, etc.
                Author's surname, first name.   Letter. Address to ___. "Title
                            of magazine or newspaper article, interview, or letter."
                            By the name of the interviewer.  Interview.  Cartoon.
                           Title of magazine or newspaper.  List the letters LP if it
                            is a recording.  Videocassette.  Movie.  Map.  Date listed
                             as 4 April 1998:  page numbers of article.
 

Computer Network Sources
                    Author's surname, first name.  "Title of the article or docu-
                                ment."  Title of the journal, newsletter, conference,
                               document, file, etc.  Type of publication, volume
                                number, issue number, or other identifying number
                                (year or date of publication):  number of pages or para-
                                graphs if given/ or n.pag.  On-line.  Name of com-
                                puter network.  Date of access.  Available:  specify elec-
                                tronic address.

         Non-print Sources
                    Author's or Singer's surname, first name.  "Title of the Docu-
                                ment, Cartoon, Radio Program, Segment of a TV Pro-
                                gram."  Title of the Song, Audiocassette, Movie, Film-
                              strip, Map, Newspaper, TV Program, etc.  Dir. First
                                name surname.  Perf. Actor's (Actress's) First Name
                                Surname.  Type of non-print source - CD-ROM. LP.
                                Videocassette.  Cartoon.  Address.   Place of produc-
                                tion:  Publisher, Record Company,  Movie Studio, or
                                Producer, Date.

Other Modifications:

1.  If two or three authors are listed, list them in the order chosen on the book's title page.  Begin the first with author's surname, first name.  Separate the two or three names with a comma.  Enter the second and third names as first name followed by surname.
2.  If more than three authors are listed, list the first author only as author's surname, first name followed by a comma and et. al.
3.  If you cite two or more books by the same author, list the books alphabetically by title with the author's surname, first name on the first book.  For each additional entry by the same author, substitute three hyphens for the author's name.
4.  The author may be listed as a corporate group such as United States Department of Labor.  Bureau of Statistics.

Parenthetical Citations

You are required to give credit for your sources of information by using parenthetical citations within the body of your paper.
This can be done in any of the following manners:
1.  List the author's name and page number in parentheses after each quote or paraphrase used.
2.  List the author's name, Title of Source, and page number within the sentence of the text after each quote or paraphrase used.
3.  Use any combination of the first two choices after each quote or paraphrase used.
